Multiple Sclerosis Awareness

Understanding the condition that affects over 90,000 Canadians and why research matters.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable disease that affects the central nervous system – the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.

In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers (myelin), causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. Over time, the disease can cause permanent damage to the nerves themselves.

Symptoms can vary widely, from numbness and fatigue to vision problems and difficulty walking. While there is currently no cure, ongoing research is making breakthrough discoveries in treatment and understanding of the disease.

By 2031, it's projected that approximately 133,635 Canadians could be living with MS. The rate is expected to increase to 430 per 100,000 population – highlighting the urgent need for continued research.

How MS Affects People

MS symptoms vary widely depending on the amount and location of nerve damage.

Fatigue

One of the most common symptoms, affecting about 80% of people with MS.

Mobility Issues

Difficulty walking, balance problems, and muscle weakness or spasms.

Vision Problems

Blurred vision, double vision, or partial loss of vision.

Numbness

Tingling sensations or numbness in the face, body, arms, or legs.

Research

Hope Through Research

Thanks to decades of dedicated research, significant progress has been made in understanding and treating MS.

MS Canada has invested over $224 million in research since 1948, supporting advancements in imaging, diagnosis, genetics, tissue repair, rehabilitation, and disease-modifying therapies.

Research Breakthroughs:

  • Multiple disease-modifying therapies now available
  • Earlier and more accurate diagnosis methods
  • Growing understanding of genetic risk factors
  • New evidence linking Epstein-Barr virus to MS development

How Zone Espoir Helps

Every event we produce, every ticket sold, contributes to the fight against MS.

Funding Research

100% of proceeds from our events go directly to supporting MS research initiatives in Canada.

Raising Awareness

Through our events and outreach, we educate the community about MS and its impact on Canadians.

Building Community

We create connections among those affected by MS and those who want to help fight the disease.

Learn More About MS

For comprehensive information about multiple sclerosis, diagnosis, treatment, and support resources, we encourage you to visit MS Canada.

MS Canada has been advancing MS research in Canada since 1948 and provides support, resources, and advocacy for everyone affected by MS.

Join the Movement

Each May, Canadians come together to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis and show support for those living with the disease.

During MS Awareness Month, you can participate in events like MS Walk, share information on social media, or simply wear orange to show your support. Every action helps bring attention to this important cause.

Ways to Participate:

  • Attend a Zone Espoir event
  • Share MS facts on social media
